A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
