The Gaming Giant Hires Popular Battle Royale Producer to Boost Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Leadership Change Follows Lukewarm Response

The new appointee steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster early showing last fall.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed employees about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a distinct direction.

Ismailer expressed that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to satisfy player expectations.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

The news follows a similar action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise development group.

Here is the full content from Ismailer's communication:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative developers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to continue.”

Through your commitment and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It affirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the requirement for a sharper identity.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the feedback to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to fulfill its promise to our fans.

Our confidence in this project increases every day. To further the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of 31st Union. Following some time of discussions, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.

His leadership and expertise in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years developing and leading some of the most popular series in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in receiving him next week. We are all eager to persist seeing the progress of the game in the weeks to follow.

David

Experience of the Incoming Leader

The appointee presently serves in the position of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Concept

Project Ethos was announced in last year together with a early access event. Then, 31st Union presented the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative step forward on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch explains. "Face the opponents with new abilities, stakes, and tests that evolve every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and trust your group can secure victory? The choice is in your hands."

The game has not yet received an announced debut schedule or consoles, but players can look forward to further news as development continues.
